As AI models become more powerful with every update, concerns about their impact on society and the economy are growing. Governments are realizing that AI models are not just another software update and that they need to be regulated. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has now suggested that the United States should lead a global watchdog to regulate and oversee frontier AI models.

In a post on LinkedIn, Demis Hassabis said that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) might be just a few years away and that, given its potential challenges in areas such as cybersecurity, urgent action is needed to address the risks. “On the horizon, we will need robust safeguards to maintain control of increasingly agentic, recursively self-improving systems - and tackle unknown issues that will only become clearer over time,” he added.
