Siruthuli has initiated efforts to rejuvenate the Singanallur tank in Coimbatore city.

Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, officials and a team from Siruthuli assessed the present condition of the Singanallur lake, one of the key urban water bodies in the city, on Tuesday (July 14, 2026). They also discussed the interventions required to rejuvenate it.The Commissioner directed the officials to expedite preparation of a comprehensive rejuvenation plan after the preliminary works, including field assessment, identification of pollution sources, desilting requirements, sewage diversion, and treatment measures.Siruthuli, the non-governmental organisation working on water solutions, convened a stakeholders’ meeting on Monday to restore Singanallur lake. Corporation Commissioner, Singanallur MLA K.S. Sri Giri Prasad, Managing Trustee of Siruthuli Vanitha Mohan, representatives from PSG & Sons’ Charities, officials from government departments, representatives of the fishermen’s association, and farmers were among those who participated in the meeting.A press release from Siruthuli said the meeting deliberated on diversion of treated water from Ukkadam and Nanjundapuram Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) into the lake, treatment of sewage entering the lake, improvement of water quality, development of a sustainable long-term management and maintenance framework, strengthening collaboration among government departments, technical experts, environmental organisations, local communities, and other stakeholders.Singanallur lake plays a vital role in supporting groundwater recharge, biodiversity, fisheries, and agriculture. Over the years, however, the lake has faced significant environmental challenges, including deteriorating water quality, inflow of untreated sewage, ecological degradation, and the need for long-term scientific management. Recognising the urgency of restoring this important water body, Siruthuli initiated the stakeholders’ meeting to facilitate collective planning and coordinated action.The initiative aims to develop a long-term restoration framework that will improve water quality, strengthen biodiversity, support local livelihoods, and transform Singanallur lake into a healthy and resilient urban ecosystem for future generations, the release said.
