A 3.5-km stretch of a 13-km sewage-carrying stream at Gandhi Maa Nagar has been restored jointly by the Coimbatore Corporation, Siruthuli and PSG & Sons’ Charities as part of an initiative to improve water flow and pave the way for nature-based wastewater treatment. The restored stretch extends from the Gandhi Maa Nagar police station to Sowripalayam Road. The works included desilting the channel and strengthening its bunds. The 13-km stream originates near the Gandhi Maa Nagar police station, crosses Avinashi Road near Fun Mall, flows through GV Residency and joins the Irugur feeder canal after crossing Trichy Road near the Uzhavar Sandhai. The watercourse carries around 21 million litres of sewage a day and has long been associated with foul odour in surrounding areas. As part of the project, a 1.3-km stretch between Avinashi Road and Sowripalayam Road along the GV Residency Link Road is being fenced to prevent the dumping of solid waste into the stream.According to Siruthuli, the restoration programme adopts a nature-based treatment model. Vetiver and kalvazhai plants will be introduced along the channel to aid natural wastewater treatment, while trees will be planted on the bund slopes to stabilise the soil and improve green cover.
