Nigerian troops have arrested a suspected foreign operative linked to the Islamic State (ISIS), believed to be an Arab of Moroccan origin, during ongoing counter-insurgency operations in Borno State.
According to security sources cited by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the suspect was apprehended after troops successfully repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on Cross Kauwa in Kukawa Local Government Area, forcing the insurgents to flee and abandon operational equipment.
Following the failed assault, troops launched follow-up exploitation and pursuit operations along the terrorists’ withdrawal routes to recover abandoned materials and track fleeing fighters.
“During the exploitation exercise conducted on Monday, troops recovered additional operational materials believed to have been abandoned during the insurgents’ hasty withdrawal,” Makama reported.
“Among the items recovered were high-frequency hand-held radios (HHR), communication equipment considered crucial to the command and control structure of the terrorist group.
