The discharge of untreated sewage into Uyyakondan Canal near Anjaneyar Temple at Kilakalkandarkottai in Tiruchi has been causing inconvenience to residents and commuters in the locality. The canal, which flows through the city, has been facing extensive pollution over the past few decades, with sewage being let directly into it in about 32 points along the 15-km-long city stretch. Despite several measures taken by Tiruchi Corporation to curb the inflow of sewage, the problem continues to persist. The affected stretch of the canal is located close to a bus stop that witnesses a steady flow of commuters throughout the day. However, people waiting for buses are forced to endure a persistent foul smell, particularly during specific periods when untreated sewage is reportedly released into the canal.Residents alleged that sewage is discharged at regular intervals, filling the surroundings with a nauseating odour that makes it difficult to remain near the bus stop. They expressed concern over the unhygienic conditions and the potential health risks posed by the continuous pollution of the canal.Adding to the problem, indiscriminate dumping of garbage into the canal has further worsened the situation. The stagnant, polluted water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, adding to the discomfort of nearby residents and commuters. “The stench emanating from the polluted water and the mosquito menace have become part of our daily lives. It is unpleasant and is affecting our day-to-day activities,” said a resident.Residents have urged the authorities to take immediate steps to stop the discharge of untreated sewage into the canal and prevent the dumping of solid waste to restore the canal.Environmental activists have also called for continuous monitoring and strict enforcement to prevent untreated sewage from entering the canal. “The authorities should identify and seal pipelines and outlets that directly release wastewater into the canal. They must also ensure that sewage is properly treated before being discharged,” said K.C. Neelamegam, an environmental activist. Published - July 14, 2026 07:51 pm IST
