Virudhunagar district administration will begin a massive drive against Prosopis juliflora from Government land and Government office premises on Wednesday.In a statement, Virudhunagar Collector N.O. Sukhaputra said that the drive would be carried out with the coordination of various government departments.The Collector said that Prosopis juliflora was an invasive species. This uncontrolled proliferation was posing danger to the native species and affecting bio-diversity. Besides reducing the natural fertility of soil, the invasive species was encroaching upon grazing land, farming land, waterbodies and government land. It was thus affecting the ecological balance and posing hurdle for the greening activities.The district administration has taken up the mass eradication of Prosopis juliflora under the special initiative, ‘Virudhunagar Sezhumai Karuvoolam’.Prosopis juliflora would be uprooted and trees of native species would be planted, the Collector said.The Collector also appealed to the members of the public, farmers, landloards, industrial units and educational institutions to remove Prosopis juliflora from their premises.The Collector also asked the people to take photographs of the wild species before uprooting them and after its removal and send them along with the details of the land, and details of native species trees planted to selumaikaruvoolamvnr@gmail.comThe best works would be acknowledged and those involved in the works would be appreciated by the district administration.
