Serbian authorities have transferred former Bulgarian Development Bank (BDB) CEO Stoyan Mavrodiev to Bulgaria after approving his extradition, Bulgarian officials confirmed.
Mavrodiev was handed over to Bulgarian authorities at the Kalotina border crossing and was then taken toward Sofia, where he is expected to remain at the National Investigation Service until the court decides whether to keep him in pretrial detention.
His lawyer, Emanuel Yordanov, confirmed to BTA that the transfer had taken place and said Mavrodiev was already at the border crossing before being escorted to the Bulgarian capital.
The former head of the state-owned lender is facing charges of abuse of office in a pretrial investigation supervised by the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office.
The case centers on an unsecured loan worth more than 75 million euros that the Bulgarian Development Bank granted to a private company in 2019. Prosecutors are investigating Mavrodiev’s role in the approval of the financing.
