The “addictive” design of Meta’s Facebook and Instagram violates EU law, the European Commission has found in a preliminary report, putting Meta at risk of large fines.

The platforms violate the EU’s Digital Services Act with design features that affect the well-being of users, including minors and vulnerable adults, the Commission said.

These include infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications and personalised recommendations, all of which can reinforce a compulsive experience, the initial report said.
