Brussels, July 10 (EFE).- The European Commission on Friday accused Meta of using potentially addictive design features on Instagram and Facebook that it says pose risks to users’ physical and mental well-being, particularly for minors, in breach of the EU’s Digital Services Act.

According to the commission’s preliminary findings, features such as infinite scrolling, automatic video playback, push notifications, and highly personalized content encourage compulsive use of the platforms.

The commission argues that these features “shift the brain into autopilot mode, contributing to unhealthy habits and compulsive use.”

If the findings are upheld and Meta fails to address the commission’s concerns, the company could face a fine of up to 6 percent of its global annual turnover.

The preliminary conclusions stem from an investigation launched in May 2024.
