American conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is “a beacon of hope across the world”, according to unearthed comments made by One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts.Mr Jones peddled falsehoods to tens of millions until he was forced into liquidation in 2024 after being found liable for defamation over his claims the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was staged and “no one died”.He eventually acknowledged the shooting was real and was ordered to pay $US1.5bn to the families of the 20 children and six staff murdered.Senator Roberts, One Nation’s second-longest serving parliamentarian, appeared on Mr Jones’s show shortly before it went off air.“Thank you so much for what you’re doing,” he told Mr Jones at the time.“You’ve been fighting a lone battle until fairly recently, and now people recognise that your credibility is very, very high.“So, thank you so much for what you’re doing.”During the interview, Senator Roberts said “unelected parasites who are fronts for big corporations, who are fronts for a few people that own them and control them” were pushing the “same basic policies” across the Anglosphere.“They want us to hate ourselves. They want us to hate each other. They want division. They want fear,” Senator Roberts said.“During Covid, we saw the same things, fear and isolation and separation, making us feel as though we’re alone and individual and vulnerable, and nothing can be further from the truth.”At one point, he also praised tech billionaire Elon Musk for criticising eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant.Ms Inman Grant said she got “credible death threats” after trying to force Mr Musk’s X to remove violent footage of a stabbing of an Assyrian Orthodox priest in Sydney’s southwest. The platform refused, sparking a legal fight amid a torrent of severe online criticism, including from Mr Musk himself.Ms Inman Grant eventually dropped her Federal Court case after a series of legal setbacks.“She absolutely got smashed,” Senator Roberts said.“Anybody who takes on the eSafety commissar is a good guy to me.“I look at what people do, not what they say, and I look at what he’s done on X and now he’s opened that up.”NewsWire has contacted One Nation for comment.
