The home secretary has said the death of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe raises “questions about the security of those in public life”.
A 28-year-old man who was already being held in connection with her alleged murder has been re-arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Other MPs called for better protection – and a clampdown on social media platforms which display hateful and violent posts about politicians.
