I consider myself a lip balm fiend. If there’s one thing I always have on me (other than my phone), it’s a tube of lip balm. I’ve tried tons of balms and masks, from ol’ reliable Chapstick, Blistex, Eos and Burt’s Bees to pricier, viral options by Jack Black, Revision Skincare, Laneige, Summer Fridays, Glossier and more. But my new favorite lip balm comes from a brand that’s a little more under the radar: Lanolips.Lanolips 101 Ointment is made with lanolin, an oil from sheep’s wool that’s similar to our own skin’s natural oils.In a previous story, experts told HuffPost about the benefits of lanolin in lip balms, including its ability to penetrate the lips’ moisture barrier and its high fat content, both of which contribute to its lasting hydrating properties. As a byproduct of wool washing, the lanolin used in Lanolips’ products is sourced cruelty-free, and derms agreed that it’s generally safe for use unless you’re allergic to wool (just do a patch test first in case you may be sensitive).I first heard about Lanolips balm from my colleague Tessa Flores, a senior shopping writer here at HuffPost. “I have extremely dehydrated skin and I have one of these tubes just about everywhere in my apartment, car and every bag I own,” Flores said in previous coverage. “I like the formula because it actually stays on my lips for at least a couple of hours, so I’m not constantly reapplying and the finish is the perfect level of glossy, without feeling sticky or looking too obnoxious.”I’ve been known to get the curiosity bug from my colleagues’ recommendations — that’s how I found my favorite vitamin C serum, too — and Flores and I seem to have similar issues with dry, dehydrated skin. How cute is this packaging?I was first struck by the colorless, simple formula and feel on my lips.I’d liken the thickness to Vaseline and Glossier’s Balm Dotcom, a comparison other reviews have also made, though most of the flavored Balm Dotcoms have some kind of tint. I prefer having an untinted balm for everyday use that I can layer on top of other lip products if I want a wash of color. (The flavored Lanolips balms are also a couple dollars less than Balm Dotcom.) The formula is less greasy than Vaseline, thankfully, and I don’t find it sticky except in the very first moments after application.My favorite part about the Lanolips, though, is that this balm stays on my lips. A miracle!I’m so used to reapplying practically every half hour because the lip balm I’m wearing seems to evaporate (or worse, dry my lips out further). I usually give the Lanolips a minute to absorb, but then I can go for much longer without needing to reach for it again, other than when I eat. I’ve walked around in subzero temperatures with this stuff as a shield on my lips, and felt protected without cracking or discomfort.As many, many reviews point out, a little goes a long way, so even when I do reapply, I don’t need much.
