Moses Tembe has come a long way from selling vegetables in the sprawling township of Umlazi, south of Durban, to being a serial entrepreneur with interests in many fields.
Few South African business leaders have built an entrepreneurial legacy as broad and enduring as Moses Tembe. Over more than three decades, he has established businesses spanning retail, property development, manufacturing, engineering, telecommunications, gaming and tourism.
Along the way, he has become one of KwaZulu-Natal's most influential voices on economic growth and development, advocating for investment, industrialisation and partnership as the foundations of sustainable growth.
Born on May 28, 1961 in Lamontville Township and raised in uMlazi, Tembe learnt the value of enterprise from an early age. As a young boy, he and his brother, Bongani Tembe, who would later become one of South Africa's leading arts executives and Chief Executive Officer of the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra, sold vegetables to local communities.
It was those early mornings and late afternoons that introduced him to customers, negotiation and the discipline required to earn a living.
