Image: Kalle Purhonen / YleSTTYle News11:09The government has proposed extending the validity of the so-called 'pushback law', formally known as the Border Security Act, until the end of 2028."The security authorities estimate that the threat of instrumentalised migration at Finland's eastern border will remain high for quite some time," said Interior Minister Mari Rantanen (Finns) in a press release.The Ministry of the Interior has circulated a draft bill for consultation. Under the legislation, Finland would be able to prevent asylum seekers from entering the country and restrict the processing of asylum applications if Russia were to facilitate the arrival of migrants at the eastern border in an attempt to exert pressure on Finland.Border crossing points along Finland’s land border with Russia have remained closed since December 2023, following a series of government decisions.
