Image: Pasi Peiponen / YleYle News7:56Russia has ordered the temporary closure of several checkpoints along its borders with Finland, Estonia and Latvia, according to reports by Russian media outlets Tass and Ria Novosti.The order enters into force from Wednesday 1 July, and it restricts the movement of people, vehicles, goods and freight.The closure affects five crossing points along Russia's frontier with Finland, including the Värtsilä, Lytta and Enso checkpoints.According to the reports in Russian media, Russia's foreign ministry was supposed to inform authorities in Riga, Tallinn and Helsinki of the decision — but according to Finland's Ministry for Foreign Affairs, no such notification has been received.In an email to Yle, the ministry said it learned about the closures from media sources.Finland closed its border with Russia in December 2023, in response to suspicions that Russia was deliberately funnelling large groups of migrants to Finnish checkpoints as part of a campaign of so-called "instrumentalised migration".A railway crossing point at Vainikkala has however remained open to cross-border freight traffic.The decision is reviewed regularly by Finnish authorities, and earlier this month the government announced that all crossing points on the eastern border will remain closed "until further notice".
