Sir, – Politicians jump to blame the Road Safety Authority whenever there are deaths on our roads (Canney concerned over RSA’s ‘lack of visibility’, July 9th). This is despite the fact that there are others who have accountability for road safety. We are aware that speed kills and that local authorities are responsible for setting speed limits and ensuring that signage is in place while the gardaí are accountable for enforcement. In this regard, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has applied a 60km/h speed limit to the Sallyglen Road [R118} in Glenageary, a limit 10km/h higher than the general speed limit applicable in the borough. As part of the 2024 special speed limit bylaws consultation, our residents’ association made a submission pointing out that (within the 60km/h zone) there are four pedestrian crossings serving two schools and vulnerable users from a St John of God facility as well as playing fields used by children from cars parked on this road. The only response to the speed limit review was that the council placed a 50km/h sign immediately in front of the pedestrian lights at the Graduate roundabout, obstructing the red light and matching the existing sign immediately behind the lights. It seems to me that the Minister should be looking beyond the RSA in correctly assigning accountability for deficiencies in road safety. – Yours, etc, JOE FLEMING,Greythorn Park,Glenageary
