Compared to other continents, mosquitoes in Europe are still more of a nuisance than a public health threat. However, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is now warning that it’s time for Europeans to take mosquito-borne diseases more seriously.
After all, mosquitoes are considered the world’s deadliest animal.
Olivier Briet, an expert in medical entomology – the study of disease-transmitting arthropods such as insects and ticks – told Euractiv why Europeans should finally tidy up their gardens, leave the “Stone Age” of unprotected housing, and consider even radical solutions to get rid of the bloodsuckers.
