The soon-to-be inaugurated Bhogapuram International Airport promises to be more than a gateway to Andhra Pradesh. Blending iconic architecture with cutting-edge technology, it is set to offer travellers a seamless, digitally enabled experience, while emerging as a catalyst for trade, tourism, logistics and business growth across the region.Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the greenfield airport, developed by the GMR Group at an investment of ₹4,750 crore in the first phase and spread across 2,203 acres. The ruling NDA government in the State had hastened the construction of the airport for which the foundation stone was laid in May 2023.The airport’s most striking feature is its terminal, inspired by the elegant form of a flying fish, symbolising the coastal identity of North Andhra. The terminal has been planned to efficiently handle both domestic and international operations while providing a comfortable travel experience.long-haul flightsThe airside infrastructure has been built for long-term growth. A 3,800-metre runway, among the longest in the region, is capable of accommodating large wide-body aircraft, including long-haul international flights. The airport has also been equipped with an advanced category-I instrument landing system, enabling safer aircraft operations during adverse weather conditions.Designed with expansion in mind, the airport can initially handle around 4.75 million passengers annually, with the master plan providing scope for substantial capacity enhancement in future phases as traffic grows.Besides serving passengers, the airport is expected to emerge as an economic catalyst for north Andhra by attracting investments in logistics, hospitality, aviation services and cargo handling.The Visakhapatnam Economic Region has now emerged as a major investment hub in the State, with nearly 40 per cent of the ₹24 lakh crore investments attracted by the State in the last two years, according to official data. The logistics as well as Maintenance, Repiar and Overhaul (MRO) business are expected to take off as the GMR has earmarked a 25 acres for MRO and other facilities.Published on July 12, 2026
