Gandhinagar: While Gujarat's school education system enrolled 1.15 crore students across 53,425 schools during 2025-26, it also recorded 54.5% retention up to Class 12, indicating 45.5% students do not remain in the system through the period.According to Unified District Information System for Education plus (UDISE+) report for the year 2025-26 released by the union ministry of education, Gujarat's retention rate from entry into schooling to the completion of secondary education stood at 54.5%, with retention rates of 53% for boys and 56.2% for girls, slightly higher than the national rate, which stands at 51.9%.According to the report, while the state had achieved 100 percent retention in foundational and preparatory stage, the rate stars declining in the middle stage at 90.4%, before falling sharply at the secondary level.As a matter of fact, according to the report, Gujarat's drop out rate at the secondary stage is 12.5 percent, against the national average of 7 percent.The report also recorded that on an average, the state has 7 teachers per school in line with the national average, but the state's student teacher ratio stands at 29 as against national 24.58 schools have been recoded in the report for having zero enrolments with 74 teachers working there in. Nationally the figures stand at 5663 and 20667 respectively.2335 schools with single teachers in Gujarat has enrolment of 80053 students as against national 100843 such schools with a total of 2912147 students.
