Ban on registration of title deeds for 3,085 acres of patta lands of the public in different parts of Karur district, which was under the prohibition of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) for many years, has been lifted in Karur district.A press release issued by Collector C. Muthukumaran said that under the Tamil Nadu Minor Inam (Abolition and Conversion into Ryotwari) Act, 1963, Inam lands were given as ‘ryotwari pattas’ to the general public who were engaged in agriculture and to the temples. To prevent individuals from selling ryotwari patta lands granted in the name of temples, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments prohibited the Sub-Registrars and the District Registrars not to register the lands of the temples. While the Tamil Nadu Minor Inam [Cancellation and Conversion into Ryotwari] Act, 1963, prohibited the registration of lands in the name of temples, the registration of patta lands issued in the name of the public under the same Act had also been erroneously prohibited. Due to the above prohibition on registration of deeds, the public was struggling to transfer their patta lands. The affected persons continued to petition the HR&CE and various departments to cancel the ban on registration.Following this, Mr. Muthukumaran said a team comprising Revenue Department officials and the HR&CE conducted a thorough review of the list of banned lands. In the first phase, 471 survey numbers, which were mistakenly banned from deed registration and were not subject to any court cases, were reviewed and released from deed registration ban. Accordingly, the ban on approximately 3085 acres of public lands in different parts of the district had been lifted. Out of 3,085 acres of lands, 214 acres belonged to Sri Balasubramaniar Temple, Pugalimalai and 204 acres belonged to Sri Kalyanapasupatheeswarar Temple. About 2,533 acres of lands belonging to Vikrutheswarar Temple and 132 acres belonging to Ravishwarar Temple in Karur district were part of the registration ban lifted. A total of 3,390 title deed holders would be benefited, the Collector said. Published - July 11, 2026 06:52 pm IST
