Bishops Diocesan College in Cape Town.

There has been a major uproar over a Pride flag flying at a prominent Cape Town school.

The Old Diocesan Committee (ODC) at Bishops Diocesan College wrote to the school council to stop flying the Pride flag and restrict its flagpoles to three official banners: the South African flag, the Bishops flag, and the St George’s flag.

According to the committee, in a vote (10 in favour and one abstention), its position is that only the three flags be flown in any official capacity.

“These three belong to all of us. They carry no faction and ask no member of the community to take a side. The many other flags in the world, however worthy the causes behind them, do the opposite: each invites the school to align itself in a contested matter, and each presence or absence is then read as a statement.”
