With the South-West monsoon covering the entire country one day behind of schedule, storage in India’s 166 major reservoirs has increased to over 30 per cent of the overall capacity. Over 50 per cent of the reservoirs are still half-empty.According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the level in the major reservoirs increased to 32.38 per cent or 59.443 billion cubic metres (BCM) of the 183.565 BCM capacity. A week ago, the level was 26 per cent of the capacity.In the past week, the deficiency in the monsoon has shrunk to 14 per cent with the East and North-East and South receiving 38 per cent and 15 per cent below normal rainfall. North-West India has received nine per cent lower than normal rainfall.States such as Uttarakhand, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal had storage below 25 per cent of capacity.
