The National Emergency Management Agency has attributed the recurring flooding in some parts of Cross River State to indiscriminate waste disposal and blocked drainage channels, urging residents to adopt proper environmental practices to prevent further disasters.
The agency made the appeal on Friday during an assessment of flood-affected communities in Calabar Municipality and Calabar South Local Government Areas following Thursday’s heavy rainfall, which submerged several communities and left many residents stranded.
Head of Operations, NEMA Uyo Operations Office, Mrs Aisueni Mmandu, said improper waste disposal had continued to worsen flooding across affected communities.
“Indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and waterways remains a major cause of blocked channels and worsening flood incidents across affected communities,” she said.
