The US just made it a lot easier to ship advanced AI chips, military equipment, and satellite technology to the United Arab Emirates. The Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security announced the reclassification of the UAE to Country Group A:5, effective July 10, 2026, a move that eliminates the need for export licenses on a wide range of sensitive technologies.
Country Group A:5 is a privileged tier in the US export control system. Being placed there means the UAE is now treated more like a close ally when it comes to trade in controlled technologies. Advanced AI chips, high-performance servers, commercial satellites, and specified military items can all flow without individual export licenses.
The shift acknowledges the UAE’s designation as a Major Defense Partner of the United States. Applications related to MGX, the Abu Dhabi-backed technology investment vehicle, will now receive favorable review status for semiconductor and server transactions.
The reclassification didn’t come out of nowhere. It follows the US-UAE Artificial Intelligence Cooperation framework signed in May 2025, which laid out commitments from the Emirati side on safeguards against technology diversion.
