Are Google and OpenAI using technicalities and loopholes to circumvent US export restrictions to China?InfoAlphabet-owned search giant and OpenAI sell tech to 'blacklisted' companies

Google and OpenAI are selling advanced AI technology to Singapore-based subsidiaries of Chinese firms blacklisted by the US Defence Department.

The sales exploit a legal loophole, as conducting transactions in Singapore sidesteps US restrictions on Chinese companies.

Google says it holds "strong terms of use and protections", including disabling accounts and blocking access to AI services where necessary.

China is widely suspected of stealing proprietary information from US AI models through a process called distillation, alarming executives and officials.
