Defence Minister Radu Miruță sails back from NATO summit on board a new Turkish-made corvette
Romania’s newest warship has arrived in Constanța after a 14-hour voyage from Turkey, marking the first time in 36 years that a new vessel has entered service with the Romanian Naval Forces.
The Turkish-made corvette Contraamiral August Roman reached Romanian waters after being commissioned in Istanbul in June.
As scooped by Euractiv, Defence Minister Radu Miruță was on board during the journey, joining the 85-member crew as they sailed the ship home.
Built in Turkey under the HISAR-class programme, the corvette cost €223 million and is designed for a wide range of missions, including maritime surveillance, patrol, search and rescue, surface combat, and anti-aircraft and anti-submarine warfare.
