Cape Town residents will have a rare chance to step inside the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) this July, with public telescope nights, historic tours and free family activities planned throughout the month.

To coincide with National Science Month, the 200-year-old National Heritage Site in Observatory is opening its usually restricted grounds for a series of evening stargazing sessions and daytime educational tours.

Whether you are an astronomy enthusiast or simply looking for an unusual winter outing, the programme offers a chance to explore one of Africa's leading centres for astronomical research.

The observatory's public Open Nights will take place on 11 and 25 July at 8 pm.
