In spite of the raised eyebrows about how some public servants derived unjustified wealth, it has been revealed at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry this week that SAPS has not conducted lifestyle audits for the past five years.

Already the commission has probed a growing list of top brass from the SAPS who seemed to be living the high-life, even if it didn't correspond with the salary-scale of government employees.

Dr Albertus Schoeman, an anti-corruption and governance expert, brought this jarring dynamic to the fore that SAPS has conducted no lifestyle audit for the past five years, when he appeared before the commission on Thursday.

Schoeman's testimony focused on disclosure regimes applicable to senior officers within the South African criminal justice system and proposed reforms to prevent the system's corrupt infiltration.
