From pot to plate: simple ways to cook and enjoy amadumbe at home.

Long before trendy superfoods filled supermarket shelves, amadumbe were already a staple on family tables across many South African communities.

The small, brown root vegetable, also known as taro, has been enjoyed for generations, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. Valued for its versatility, affordability and comforting taste, amadumbe are now finding their way back into modern kitchens as more people rediscover traditional foods.

Cooking amadumbe is simple and requires very few ingredients.

Start by rinsing about 1kg of the vegetables under cold water to remove any soil. Place them in a large pot, cover with water and add a pinch of salt if desired.
