The Duke of Sussex has had the week from hell after being denied a bed at Buckingham Palace and losing his most high profile court against the British media. Perhaps now is the time to draw a line under his many battles07:16, 10 Jul 2026Updated 07:17, 10 Jul 2026Battle tanks, Wimbledon, mini golf and a trip to London Zoo….it’s a royal knockout! We have seen so much of our royal family this week that you’d be forgiven for wondering why.Naturally, they are taking full advantage of our latest heatwave with the added element of boosting their engagement figures.Yet despite their diligent endeavours and good humour (see pics of Charles and Camilla with a giant tortoise for more), there really is just one story, or perhaps circus, in town.Prince Harry’s return to the UK has made headlines for all the wrong reasons.First there was the grand announcement.Harry was on his way with Meghan and their children. A family celebration? A reconciliation, perhaps?Definitely a stay in a royal residence, talk of potential olive branches from the King and a public appearance by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. But one by one, the wheels started to come off.Cue the U-turns, the Flip-flopping, backtracking and more.If poor Harry does another reverse ferret he’s in danger of giving himself whiplash! It’s not been a good week for the duke. Traveling to the UK alone due to his security fears, refused a bed for the night at his father’s house and suffering a humiliating defeat in his most high profile court case to date. What was supposed to be his latest attempt at redemption with the public and perhaps improved relations with his family, has turned into an unmitigated disaster. Here to promote the fantastic Invictus Games and visit a number of charities he has worked with for years, the chaos surrounding his trip has completely enveloped him. When Harry and Meghan announced their intention to “carve out a progressive new role within this institution”, their plans would have been a world away from the reality they find themselves in now.Imagine a situation where you not only have to make an appointment to see your dad, but you can’t even get a bed for the night when he’s got 240 of them in his house. So what do we know and where are we now?Harry is in the UK, Birmingham to be precise. However long for is anyone’s guess.Talks are ongoing between father and son to potentially arrange a meeting. Whether that is solo or with Meghan and their two children, Archie and Lilibet, is very much up in the air. It’s exhausting enough trying to keep up with all the developments, let alone living it.Aside from the bruising judgement in his case against the publishers of the Daily Mail this week, much has been in Harry’s control.Whether he is of sufficient office or profile to be releasing quasi-royal ‘operational notes’, detailing every cough and spit of his schedule, is debatable. But announcing your intention to travel with your family when you haven’t got your security in place makes no sense at all.Now he’s just added more headaches to his diary while already trying to shoehorn in a meeting with the King.Article continues belowWhat is not in doubt is the King - and most of the world - is tired of this sideshow. If Harry is to take one thing from his trip, it might be that his constant battles with the establishment and his family must come to an end.
Prince Harry's bruising week could still pave the way to a new future
