Tadej Pogačar delivered another demonstration of his supreme ability on stage six of the Tour de France, going solo on the Col du Tourmalet and winning by a margin of two minutes and 38 seconds over Jonas Vingegaard in Gavarnie-Gèdre.The Slovenian also seized the yellow jersey from Torstein Træen. The Norwegian had started the day seven minutes and 53 seconds in front of Pogačar but was dropped on the ascent of the Tourmalet and crashed on the descent too.The other GC favorites, led by Remco Evenepoel and Paul Seixas, worked together in the closing stages to limit the damage as much as possible but, as so often, no one was in Pogačar’s league.Jacob Whitehead and Chris Waugh analyse a seismic stage.Pogačar bows after crossing the line at the end of stage six (Loic Venance / AFP via Getty Images)Tour de France erupts on slopes of TourmaletVingegaard’s teeth were grimaced and bared like a wild animal; backed into a corner and fighting for his life. The Col du Tourmalet is the Pyrenees’ most iconic ascent; a graveyard of Tour de France dreams and the forge of its greatest triumphs. Topping out at 2,115m, these sun-blasted slopes have been climbed more than any other in the race, first appearing in La Grande Boucle back in 1910.Race organizers planted the monolith in the middle of stage six, with the parcours descending off the Tourmalet’s summit to the village of Luz-Saint-Sauveur, before a long, shallow drag to the finish line in Gavarnie-Gedre. In many ways, it resembled stage 20 of last year’s Giro d’Italia, passing over the Colle delle Finestre, in which Simon Yates captured a redemptive victory in last season’s most exciting day of racing.Vingegaard’s Visma-Lease a Bike team attempted to repeat their tactics from that day by putting Belgian rouleur Victor Campenaerts into the early break. In theory, had it worked, Campenaerts would beat the peloton over the top of the Tourmalet, before then being there to help Vingegaard on the subsequent climb to the line.Pogačar goes solo on the Tourmalet (Jeff PACHOUD / AFP via Getty Images)The issue was that the break was too small and failed to stay away after delivering Mads Pedersen to intermediate sprint points — while Vingegaard’s other domestiques, such as Davide Piganzoli and Matteo Jorgenson, were dropped early on the Tourmalet. UAE Team Emirates XRG, by contrast, delivered a consummate display of strength, slowly reducing the bunch until Isaac del Toro’s attack with five kilometres of the climb remaining.Pogačar was the only rider with the ability to follow his younger teammate’s surge, who dropped back after rotating for the next kilometre of ascending. Del Toro’s job, however, was done.Vingegaard, despite deliberately not matching Pogačar’s initial attack, was not able to close the gap — with the elastic snapping. The Dane contorted himself in his attempt to follow, Pogačar gliding up the mountain in front, leading by 30 seconds over the race’s highest point.
