The 34-year-old was playing for his country against Ukraine in an international friendly when he collapsed to the floor clutching his chest in frightening scenes. After suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2021, Eriksen had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) installed, which, upon detecting dangerous heart rhythms, provides a shock to restore beats to a normal rhythm. The life-saving device kicked into action following his collapse in the friendly against Ukraine. Despite concerns over his health, he does not look set to retire, judging by a statement from his current employers on his omission from their pre-season camp. Their official update read: "Christian Eriksen will soon begin an individual rehabilitation programme. After a conversation with VfL managing director Dieter Hecking, it was decided that the 34-year-old will complete this in his home country of Denmark. "VfL is in regular contact with Christian as well as the treating physicians. For the course of his rehabilitation, we continue to wish Christian all the best." Eriksen is contracted to the Bundesliga 2 outfit for another 12 months, with the former Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder unable to prevent them from being relegated to the German second division. Wolfsburg's upcoming campaign kicks off on August 8, 2026, as they face Kaiserslautern, a game that Eriksen is highly unlikely to be available for. He made 34 appearances in the 2025//26 season, scoring three goals and grabbing 10 assists. Eriksen also captained Wolfsburg in the latter stages of the campaign and did not show any sign of more heart problems before his collapse in action for Denmark.
