Between January 2025 and June 2026, Kanniyakumari district police secured convictions in a total of 70 cases registered under Protection of Child from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act cases in the district, leading the four southern districts in Tirunelveli range during the same period.The district police have been undertaking various initiatives to curb the crimes in the district. One such notable initiative is “Nimir” which had played a paramount role in reducing the POCSO Act related cases in the district, thereby ensuring to guide the affected minors and safeguard their future.The team supervised by Additional Superintendent of Police M. Balasubramanian and Inspector Shanthakumari, comprises female police officers in the sub divisions. The team identifies and monitors minors lacking parental supervision and raises awareness of crimes punishable under POCSO Act.In the last one and half years convictions have been secured in 70 POCSO Act cases in the district, this includes 20 years imprisonment in 26 cases, 15 years imprisonment in two cases, 10 years imprisonment in three cases and seven years imprisonment in four cases and life imprisonment in three cases.Speaking to The Hindu Kanniyakumari District Superintendent of Police R. Stalin said that the district police has been continuing to take efforts to secure convictions in POCSO Act cases, adding that Kanniyakumari district recorded the highest conviction among the southern districts in Tirunelveli range during the same period.He added that trial monitoring officers in each subdivision helped in effective follow-up of Pocso related cases, assisting the minors in court proceedings and facilitated collection of proper evidence from them.Mr. Stalin noted that currently the “Nimir” team and Singappen Special Force (SSF) work in coordination to prevent the crimes against the children and to ensure that cases are registered and convictions are secured against those involved in such offences.
