A stretch on Ambalathadayar Madam Street has been dug up to facilitate construction of sewage chamber in Puducherry on Thursday.

The ongoing works to improve sewer network in Boulevard is hampering smooth flow of traffic. Several roads in Boulevard, including Aurobindo Street, Kamatchi Amman Koil Street, Muthumariamman Koil Street, Savarirayalu Street and Ambalathadayar Madam Street were dug up in the recent days to construct sewage chambers.The old sewer lines in these places were replaced a few months ago using trenchless technology. However, during the time of replacing the pipes, the chambers were not constructed for providing sewerage line connections to houses in certain places of the town.Residents in Boulevard said the inconvenience for road users due to repeated digging of roads could have been avoided had the Public Works Department planned the entire project in a more systematic manner.Now that the work has been competed in Aurobindo and Kamatchi Amman streets, residents want the roads to be restored at the earliest. The poor condition of the road in both the locations was hindering smooth flow of vehicles, said a resident.“Though the work is over in both the streets, motorists still find it difficult to manoeuvre their vehicles due to uneven nature of the road surface. Manholes are protruding because the dug-up road has not been laid properly. The condition of Aurobindo Street near MG Road has become far from motorable and the road needs to laid properly,” he said.Two days ago, the Ambalathadayar Madam Street was cut for facilitating the construction of the chamber, a shopowner on Mission Street said. “The road is frequented by tourists on weekends.
