Newcastle United have completed the signing of midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax.The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Newcastle were working on deal in the region of €25million ($28.6m) for the 18-year-old, who had already said goodbye to players and staff at Ajax ahead of the anticipated move.Ajax were reluctant to sell the highly-rated midfielder and wanted him to stay, but he entered the final two years of his contract and there was no indication that he would renew his terms. Steur has signed a five-year deal and will wear the number 14.

I joined when I was seven, and I leave with only good memories, but when a club like Newcastle comes for you, it’s really hard to say no. The last few days have gone fast, and I’m very happy to join.“I’m a player who likes to get on the ball and play forward all the time. I’m happy playing between the lines and I feel I have a lot of energy in my game. I just want to win.”Steur broke into Ajax’s first team from the youth setup during the 2025-26 campaign. He made 25 appearances last season, and scored his first senior goal in the 1-1 draw with Feyenoord.Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “He (Seur) is a top young prospect that has already tasted Champions League and top-flight Dutch football.“We see real potential in Sean and believe he has the characteristics to become a valuable player for us for years to come. There is also interest from Arsenal in his central midfield partner from last season, Bruno Guimaraes, though Newcastle have strongly insisted he is not for sale.Steur made his first-team debut for Ajax in February 2025, having come through the club’s famed academy, which has seen players such as Jorrel Hato, Jurrien Timber and Brian Brobbey move on to bigger sides in Europe in recent years. There would be an element of Steur being a ‘project player’ to a degree, given he is only 18 and needs to mature physically, yet the upside of the deal feels huge because the midfielder is extremely highly rated and has been on the radar of several top clubs.Although Steur is not an exact like-for-like replacement for Tonali, as the Italian’s profile is unique, he would take the departed midfielder’s place in the squad. Lewis Miley, 20, is likely to be given an opportunity to assert himself as first-choice No 6, which means Steur will probably compete for a place in the side initially while developing.Steur is two-footed, has an element of press resistance in his play and can play deeper or more advanced in midfield. There is a feeling he has all the attributes to excel in the Premier League.Newcastle may be reducing the amount of experience and top-level proven performers within their squad, but UEFA’s financial restrictions mean they must plan sustainability for the long term and acquiring Steur as a teenager looks like it would be an astute move.
