WASHINGTON — On the first day of spring training, Luis García Jr. looked around the Washington Nationals’ spring training complex, let the wheels spin in his head and wondered whether he had missed something on the transaction log.It was only a few moments later that a few 30-somethings approached the longest-tenured player on the team to introduce themselves. Then, two eureka moments.First, he said with a grin and through an interpreter: “I realized they were the coaches.” Second?“The coaches would try and get to know you, try to talk to you, and immediately get that confidence in (you).”For months, many have wondered how the Nationals are doing this — how they have put together the highest-scoring offense in MLB, one year after having the 20th-best offense in MLB, without signing a position player to an MLB contract this winter.Look no further than the breakout season from the 26-year-old first baseman, who has a 1.157 OPS since May 24 (second best in MLB) and on Wednesday fielded “MVP” chants, flicked his bat toward the dugout, hit his career-high-extending 20th home run and tapped his wrist to signal, in his words, “It’s my time.”García, like many in the Nationals’ lineup, has found confidence this season that he did not know he had. It stems from one of the team’s new philosophical pillars:Identify what makes a player special, and hammer the heck out of it.For García, that’s simple: Very few players can make as much contact as he can. Most of the players who can are sacrificing power to do so. The Nationals have stressed to García that his ability to do both makes him special, all while helping him make even more contact and hit the ball even harder than in years’ past.“Usually it’s one or the other,” hitting coach Matt Borgschulte said. “He has both. So I think he’s done a really good job of starting to leverage that. … He can take his good ‘A swing’ and not just try to put the ball in play.”
