One wounded as Kuwaiti armed forces intercept four missiles and 10 drones The NationalJuly 09, 2026President Sheikh Mohamed has emphasised the need to bring peace to the region during talks with Sheikh Meshal, Emir of Kuwait.Sheikh Mohamed arrived in Kuwait on Thursday, only hours after the country came under renewed attacks from Iran, in what was described as a "dangerous escalation".The Gulf state's armed forces intercepted three ballistic missiles, one cruise missile and ten drones, all launched by Tehran.Bahrain and Qatar were also attacked by Iran on Thursday. The attacks followed a second night of strikes by the US on Iranian assets. Most targets were missile batteries and radar stations in the south of the country, from where Iranian forces have fired on international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.Leaders hold talksSheikh Mohamed and Sheikh Meshal underlined the importance of strengthening the foundations of stability and lasting peace during a meeting held at Bayan Palace.The leaders also explored ways to expand co-operation between the nations, with a focus on development and the economy.Sheikh Meshal hosted a lunch in honour of Sheikh Mohamed and his delegation.Sheikh Mohamed was bid farewell at Amiri Airport by Sheikh Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah, Crown Prince of Kuwait, and other sheikhs, ministers and officials, at the conclusion of his visit.Accompanying Sheikh Mohamed in Kuwait were Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court; Sheikh Saif bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior; Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs; Sheikh Mohammed bin Tahnoon, adviser to President Sheikh Mohamed, and other senior sheikhs and officials.Kuwait fends off renewed strikesMaj Gen Saud Abdulaziz Al Otaibi, military spokesman for Kuwait, earlier said the projectiles were successfully engaged by the country's air defences.The interceptions resulted in material damage after debris fell on several sites across the country, he said. Photo: UAE Presidential Court ---InfoKuwait strongly condemned the Iranian aggression, saying the latest attack represented a serious breach of its sovereignty.The Foreign Ministry said the attack reflected a recurring pattern of hostile actions and constituted a direct threat to Kuwait's security and stability, as well as a breach of international law, the UN Charter and Security Council Resolution 2817.The ministry described the assault as a dangerous escalation that could heighten regional tension, jeopardise peace and security in the Gulf, and undermine continuing diplomatic efforts to resolve disputes through negotiation.Kuwait stressed its security and sovereignty were a “red line” and said it reserved the right to take all necessary measures to protect its territory and national security in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.UAE denounces latest attacksThe UAE "condemned in the strongest terms" the renewed Iranian strikes on Bahrain and Kuwait.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attacks represented a "flagrant violation" of the sovereignty of both countries and a threat to their security and stability.The ministry stressed the UAE's full solidarity with Bahrain and Kuwait and its support for all measures aimed at safeguarding their security and stability.Updated: July 09, 2026, 2:03 PM
