The United States has approved Germany’s purchase of American long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced, ending earlier uncertainty over whether the planned deployment of the weapons would move forward.

Speaking to lawmakers in the Bundestag, Merz said the agreement was reached with Washington on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara.

“On the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, we agreed with the US government to buy US Tomahawk missiles, which will be deployed in Germany,” the chancellor said.

According to Merz, the acquisition will address a major gap in Germany’s defense capabilities.

“This will fill an important strategic gap in our defense capabilities,” he told parliament, while adding that Berlin would continue efforts to develop European-made alternatives.
