Manchester United have revealed the proposed location of their new 100,000-seater stadium within the surrounding area’s regeneration.United announced last month that they had acquired 25 acres of land, approximately 350 metres to the north west of Old Trafford’s existing site, from industrial company Indurent.The site sits between Wharfside Way, Europa Way and John Gilbert Way.At an event on Thursday morning announcing the masterplan for the wider Trafford Wharfside regeneration project, United confirmed that the stadium will be built on the acquired land.(Trafford Council, Manchester United Football Club)The plans represent a change from conceptual designs released in March last year, which involved United’s new stadium being built on land directly to the west of Old Trafford, owned by rail logistics company Freightliner.Freightliner were demanding around £400m for the land, substantially higher than United’s projected price of around £50m.Collette Roche, United’s chief executive of new stadium development, said the new stadium’s location will allow the club to “preserve the heritage, traditions and matchday rituals that are so important to our supporters”.“The publication of the Wharfside Masterplan marks another significant milestone in our journey to create a new world-class home for Manchester United at the heart of a vibrant and transformational district for Trafford and Greater Manchester.“Together with our partners, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver a destination that creates lasting benefits for supporters, local communities and the wider region for decades to come.Roche added: “We are committed to building a world-class stadium with our supporters, not simply for them. Atmosphere, affordability and accessibility will remain at the heart of our plans, and we look forward to continuing our engagement with fans and other stakeholders as we move into the next phase of design and development.”Images released on Thursday morning included a placeholder for the new stadium, rather than the canopy design unveiled last year.United say all images are indicative and purely to demonstrate location. The club will now move on to the stadium design phase, which they say will include consultation with supporters.United say that no decision has been made on the future of the existing Old Trafford.Lord Sebastian Coe, who is the chair of the Old Trafford Regeneration Mayoral Development Corporation, said: “This is a great day and an important step on our road to achieving the best of everything for Old Trafford, in terms of places for sport, leisure, residential and business.“The masterplan really makes the forthcoming transformation begin to feel real and achievable – that it’s really happening, and now! So much is still to be decided and refined in consultation with everyone involved, but the framework is most definitely in place.”
