TVTV NewsHBO MaxThe drama based on a harrowing true story stars Oscar-winning Geena Davis in the lead role.09:06, 09 Jul 2026Fans of true crime are urged to watch out for an upcoming series about the infamous 'Killer Landlady'.A new crime series about the 1980s serial killer Dorothea Puente has just been unveiled, with Thelma & Louise star Geena Davis embodying the lead character.Nicknamed the 'Killer Landlady' and the 'Death House Landlady' in the press, Puente, who has also featured in Netflix's Worst Roommate Ever, was a Sacramento woman who ran a boarding house for the less fortunate in the 1980s.HBO, who has ordered the Dorothea series, teased: "Her seemingly benevolent actions belied her sinister motives".Puente was active between 1982 and 1988 and was charged with the murders of nine people, including several of her tenants. She was known to have poisoned her victims and buried their bodies so she could cash their social security checks.After being convicted of three of the nine murders, she was sentenced to life in prison in 1993 and died at the Central California Women's Facility in 2011, aged 82.Posing as a landlady, Puente had lured elderly and mentally disabled people to stay at the boarding house she ran.She was arrested on November 16, 1988, after authorities uncovered the bodies at the boarding house during an investigation into the disappearance of one of her residents.Puente actress Geena Davis is also set to executive produce the series, which will stream on HBO Max as well as HBO.She is best known for her film roles in Beetlejuice and Thelma & Louise, with her TV credits including Grey's Anatomy and the recently cancelled Netflix series, The Boroughs.Puente has been featured in numerous true crime shows including Deadly Women, World's Most Evil Killers and Worst Roommate Ever.Her boarding house at 1426 F Street in Sacramento was the subject of the 2015 documentary short - The House Is Innocent.A biopic titled Dorothea was also released in November 2025, with Susan Priver playing the serial killer.Article continues belowDorothea will air on HBO and HBO Max.Choose Daily Mirror as a 'Preferred Source' on Google News for quick access to the news you value.‌HBO Max
