Dealing with increased pressures on the infrastructure of its popular destinations, Greece has introduced a special cruise fee, reaching up to €20 per passenger for Mykonos and Santorini in high season.

Despite this government initiative, however, an analysis of economic data shows that the difference in total tax burdens between land-based hospitality and marine tourism remains significant, as the domestic measure covers only a part of the wider deficit.

In addition, a climate crisis resilience fee has also been imposed on hotel stays. These data are highlighted in a study by the European organization Transport & Environment (T&E).
