NATO’s support for Ukraine remains unquestionable and steadfast, but the key challenge for European allies is fulfilling their commitments to strengthen defense capabilities and shape a new security architecture.
Murat Yetkin, an international affairs expert, analyst, and journalist, made these remarks in an exclusive comment to Ukrinform on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara.
“First and foremost, support for Ukraine remains steadfast, and there is no doubt about it. The summit also confirms this. The question is whether the allies—especially the European ones—will be able to fulfill their promises. It is easy to make promises, but fulfilling them is much more difficult. This applies not only to Ukraine but to international politics in general,” Yetkin said.
It is in this context, according to the expert, that U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan should be viewed.
“Trump’s remarks that he might not have come if Erdogan hadn’t invited him mean that he is giving European NATO members a chance to fulfill their promises to increase defense budgets and establish a new security architecture. But there are doubts about this,” the expert explained.
