A Special Offences and Mobile Court sitting in Oshodi has convicted and sentenced 16 people to prison for violating Lagos State environmental laws, as authorities intensified enforcement against indiscriminate waste disposal.
The convictions followed the arraignment of the offenders by the Lagos Waste Management Authority over offences ranging from illegal waste dumping to failure to use approved waste collection services.
Each of the convicts was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment after being found guilty on four counts relating to indiscriminate waste disposal, failure to patronise assigned Private Sector Participant operators, breach of environmental sanitation regulations and other related offences.
The offenders were arrested during LAWMA enforcement operations conducted along Gbagada Expressway, Anthony Oke, Oworonsoki and Bariga, where they were allegedly caught dumping refuse on road medians, drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.
