The European Commission has opened five infringement procedures against Bulgaria as part of its latest package addressing failures by member states to comply with European Union legislation.
The cases concern shortcomings in the areas of environmental protection, the internal market, home affairs, justice and taxation. Some of the proceedings involve new formal notices, while others have advanced to the next stage with reasoned opinions after earlier concerns remained unresolved.
If Bulgaria fails to address the identified issues within two months, the Commission may refer the cases to the Court of Justice of the European Union and seek financial penalties.
