Former Ukrainian commander-in-chief and current ambassador to the United Kingdom, Valerii Zaluzhnyii has warned that claims Russia has already lost the war are both misleading and strategically dangerous. Writing in The Daily Telegraph, he argued that recent Ukrainian battlefield successes should not be mistaken for evidence that the conflict is nearing its conclusion.
According to Zaluzhnyi, some Western analysts have interpreted Ukraine’s strikes on Russian logistics, infrastructure and supply routes as proof that Moscow is approaching defeat. He argued that such assessments focus too heavily on individual military achievements while overlooking the broader strategic picture.
“This is a dangerous misinterpretation of the war,” he wrote.
A war of endurance, not breakthroughs
Zaluzhnyi said the character of modern warfare has fundamentally changed. The widespread use of drones, precision-guided weapons and constant surveillance has made decisive offensives increasingly difficult for both sides.
