The White House was hit with a savage reality check on Tuesday after hyping up how one Philadelphia-area gas station is supposedly “lowering the price at the pump” under President Donald Trump.The White House took to social media to promote one of 25 stations that is part of the “Freedom Fuel Network,” a chain of unclear origin Trump recently described as a “VERY smart retailer” dropping prices at locations around Philly.“President Trump is leading the charge to lower gas prices this summer - putting more money in your pocket. 🔥,” read the White House post, alongside a video of several people gassing up the $3.47 a gallon price at the station.While the price at the Dresher, Pennsylvania station is reportedly lower than at least two nearby stations, gas prices were $2.99 a gallon at this same location during Joe Biden’s final months as president in November 2024, per a snapshot from Google Maps.Critics such as journalist Aaron Rupar also accurately noted that the figure remains higher than the average gas price when Biden left office in January 2025 ($3.12 a gallon).“Trump wants to throw a parade for himself over one station where it’s $3.47,” Rupar added in a post to X.The White House’s attempt at flexing the prices at the station marks a noteworthy shift in messaging under a president who vowed to bring prices below $2 a gallon during his 2024 campaign.The post arrived just before the president announced that the interim deal to end his Iran war — a key contributor to rising prices at the pump in recent months — was “over.” Oil prices jumped over 6% following his comments.Social media users bashed the White House for touting $3.47 a gallon as a good price, with at least one person calling it a “joke.”Many others characterized the promotion as a “government-run” gas station, but a White House spokesperson told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the Freedom Fuel Network is a private company just making gas more affordable.
