Ruben Amorim has admitted that he made “mistakes” he made during his time as Manchester United head coach and has apologised to the club’s fans. This is the first time the Portuguese coach has publicly addressed United supporters since he was sacked in January. The 41-year-old was named the new AC Milan head coach on June 16.Speaking at his unveiling in Milan on Wednesday, Amorim said: “It is hard to explain the mistakes. It is hard to tell you about every mistake, but I learned a lot (at United).“I made some mistakes. I didn’t have the opportunity to say something to the Manchester United fans at that moment, and I am sorry for that. I am really proud to have been their coach for a year, but now it is a different history.“There are a lot of things that I could have done better at the last experience. But sometimes it is like that. You have to learn to find the right spots to reach a different level.”United paid €11million (£9.5m) to hire Amorim, who was one of the most highly rated coaches in Europe after winning two Primeira Liga titles in Portugal at Sporting CP.Despite sitting only four points off the top four upon his arrival, United went on to record a 15th-place league finish — their worst of the Premier League era — with just 42 points, their fewest in a top-flight season since relegation in 1973-74.Only 14 months after being appointed, Amorim was sacked by the Old Trafford hierarchy, including chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, following a breakdown in relations behind the scenes.Berrada said in June that Amorim struggled as United’s head coach because he “cornered himself” by sticking too rigidly to his ideas. He did, however, pay tribute to Amorim for improving the dressing room culture and his contribution to United qualifying for the Champions League under his successor, Michael Carrick.Milan, who finished fifth last season, completed the signing of striker Goncalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain in June for a club-record fee. The Italian side begin their 2026-27 Serie A campaign against Torino on August 23.
