Amazon has a new internal project with a name straight out of a Bond film. Moonraker, as it’s called, is the company’s bid to transform Alexa from a glorified kitchen timer into something that can actually think, reason, and take action across multiple steps without human hand-holding.
The price tag for this ambition? Projected GPU costs alone are expected to surpass $100 million in 2026, according to leaked planning documents reviewed by Business Insider. That makes Moonraker the most expensive single initiative within Amazon’s broader Alexa+ program.
What Moonraker actually does
The goal is what the industry calls “agentic AI,” the ability for a system to handle complex, multistep tasks from a single command. Think telling Alexa to book a ride to dinner and text your friend that you’re on the way, all in one breath.
To pull this off, Amazon is deploying hundreds of Nvidia GPUs and integrating Anthropic’s Sonnet model for enhanced reasoning and visual capabilities.
