Greek-Australian award-winning filmmaker, author and cultural philosopher Mary Zournazi’s latest documentary, “Acropolis Cats & Other Wondrous Animals,” will have its world premiere at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival on July 11.
The documentary explores the tenderness, connection and tragedies shared between humans and animals, following the lives of cats and other animals that have been abandoned in Greece, Australia and around the world.
The film examines both the compassion and cruelty humans can show toward other animals and themselves, presenting a call to reflect on truth, empathy and freedom in a rapidly changing world.
The Melbourne Documentary Film Festival will also screen Zournazi’s previous two films, “Dogs of Democracy” and “My Rembetika Blues,” as part of a special retrospective celebrating her work and forming part of her “Greek Trilogy.”
“I’m excited to show this new film as a part of my Greek Trilogy at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival,” Zournazi said. “Acropolis Cats & Other Wondrous Animals” is a film about love, tenderness and cruelty and puts a spotlight on humans and animals, what connects us to each other and the world. It’s a small step towards remembering our humanity in these times.”
