Residents of the Riemvasmaak informal settlement are calling for police to arrest the rape suspect.

A Cape Town community is still reeling in shock after the horrific rape of a 16-year-old in Phumlani Village in Lotus River on Saturday, July 4.

The teenager had gone missing on Saturday in the Riemvasmaak informal settlement, which resulted in a community search. As time progressed, searches were being conducted throughout the area.

Speaking to IOL, family spokesperson and community worker, Beryl Williams, said that as searches were ongoing, no one knew the perpetrator was among them assisting with the searches.

“By 2pm, some of the community members had a gut feeling to go to this guy’s shack. They realised they had not searched his place as they searched all over. They got to his shack and told him to open the door. He said he was washing; they then pounded on the door, eventually breaking the door open,” Williams said.
